THCB Products: A Brief Breakdown

THCB products are newly discovered and extremely potent. The cannabis plant is often in the spotlight of regular new discoveries. So far, researchers have identified over 120 cannabinoids, surely with more awaiting discovery. Found in late 2019 by a group of Italian researchers, THCB is a promising new cannabinoid with seemingly many beneficial effects and properties to offer.

Learn about THCBโ€™s benefits, potency, legality, and risks below!

What is THCB?

THCB, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabutol, is a cannabinoid closely related to THC, the main and most abundant cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. According to the researchers that discovered it, THCB has similar effects and benefits to THC, but with an increased potency. The compound interacts with cannabinoid receptors, specifically the CB1 and CB2 receptors, in the bodyโ€™s endocannabinoid system, and has a much higher binding affinity than regular THC.

Interestingly, THCB was discovered in 2019 at the same time as THCP, one of the most potent cannabinoids found in the plant with a strength estimated to be around 30 times stronger than that of regular delta 9. THCB is unique in the sense that it has a butyl side chain instead of a pentyl side chain, which helps It better attach to the CB1 receptors in the brain, making THCBโ€™s psychoactive effects much more potent than those of delta 9.

There isn't yet an abundance of scientific research surrounding the cannabinoid, but already cannabis users have discovered its unbelievably strong effects. One study on the compound showed promising properties similar to those of THC, with researchers discovering the cannabinoidโ€™s potential anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties as well as decreased pain, slowed reaction times, and deeper sleep. Additionally, the compound seems to contain anti-nausea, anti-anxiety, appetite-stimulating, and stress-reducing properties.

Despite the lack of further research, general research and anecdotal evidence suggests that THCB works similarly to THC. It has a strong potential to relieve pain and help with inflammation, but with users reporting a much more pronounced high due to its chemical structure. This likely doesnโ€™t come as a surprise to those familiar with the effects of other cannabinoids, as analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects seem to be some of the most common effects across cannabinoids found in the plant. Even so, more research is needed on the compound and its effects before we are able to accurately measure THCBโ€™s full range of benefits. ย

How Strong is THCB?

As previously mentioned, THCB has a much more potent psychoactive strength than delta 9 THC. In fact, the compound is estimated to be around the same strength as THC-P, which has the potential to be around 30 times stronger than regular delta 9. In other words, this stuff will rock your socks off!

How Are THCB Products Made?

THCB naturally occurs in some strains of cannabis, but it doesnโ€™t exist in usable enough quantities to satisfy current market demands, so the compound is instead converted from other cannabinoids using isomerization.
All cannabinoids are derived from CBGA, or cannabigerolic acid, sometimes known as โ€œthe mother of all cannabinoidsโ€ or the โ€œmother cannabinoidโ€ for obvious reasons. Because of this, all cannabinoids, from THC to CBD, have pretty similar molecular structures. The process of isomerization simply involves rearranging one compoundโ€™s molecular structure into another using a series of chemical reactions.

To create THCB from CBD, for example, the molecules in CBD undergo specific man-made chemical changes that force it to evolve into THCB. Although it is an inherently natural substance, THCB is synthesized from other cannabinoids using chemistry because it does not exist in high enough concentrations.

Is THCB Legal?

THCB is considered federally legal as dictated in the 2018 Farm Bill, which made hemp and hemp derivatives legal across the United States as long as they contain no more than 0.3% delta 9 THC. According to the bill, hemp is defined as cannabis plants containing 0.3% THC or less, while marijuana entails cannabis plants surpassing that 0.3% THC threshold. As long as the cannabinoid is sourced from hemp and not marijuana, THCB is considered legal at the federal level in the United States.ย

That said, a handful of states have banned or heavily restricted intoxicating hemp derivatives within their own jurisdiction, so THCB is not legal in all states. Those who have banned or restricted hemp-derived cannabinoids include:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Washington State

Is THCB Safe?

From what we know, research tells us that there exists no reason to consider THCB any less safe than conventional THC. The replacement of THCโ€™s pentyl side chain with THCBโ€™s butyl side chain appears unlikely to cause any safety issues.

Because THCB is so new, however, itโ€™s worth practicing extra precaution when evaluating the safety of the THCB products you consider purchasing. Because the FDA does not monitor the production or distribution of hemp-derived cannabinoids, retailers and manufacturers are left to determine their own standards for safety regarding the products they sell. This is the most important safety risk to consider and why itโ€™s so important to do your own research and fully understand where each company stands regarding the safety and quality procedures involved in creating these cannabinoids.

At Diamond CBD, all of our products are made using organic, all-American hemp grown with no herbicides, pesticides, or any other harmful chemicals. Additionally, because the process of isomerization could potentially result in chemical contamination, all of our products are rigorously third-party lab tested to ensure the compoundโ€™s safety, quality, and the absence of any sort of harmful contaminants.

Another important safety aspect to consider when it comes to THCB is dosing. Because the compound is so new, there doesnโ€™t currently exist a recommended dosage, but since itโ€™s so psychoactively potent, THCB should not be taken lightly.
As a rule of thumb, we recommend starting with a lower dose and building your way up to a buzz that's right for you. Dosage isn't an exact science even for well-established cannabinoids, as how much you should take varies from person to person and depends on individual factors like age, weight, rate of metabolism, and desired effects.

Start off light and take less THCB than you think youโ€™ll need, and assess how the compound affects your body before continuing to partake. It may seem a bit tedious and annoying to go through this trial-and-error process, but hey, itโ€™s better to be safe than sorry. Trust us, youโ€™d rather take the time to find the best dosage for you than end up taking too much and having a bad time.

How THCB Products Compare to Other Cannabinoids

There are many different cannabinoids currently circulating the hemp market, but for now, weโ€™ll mainly focus on the differences and similarities between THCB, THC, CBD, and THCP.

THCB has pretty similar effects to those of delta 9 THC but with added potency. In other words, the two cannabinoids behave similarly when ingested and cause the same effects, including pain relief, anxiety relief, and appetite stimulation. That said, when ingesting THCB, these effects are stronger and more pronounced than when ingesting the same amount of THC.

You may already know CBD for its popularity within health and wellness circles, as the cannabinoid contains many desirable health effects like relieving pain, offsetting anxiety and depression, and promoting sleep. Unlike THCB, however, CBD does not cause any psychoactive effects. So, in essence, THCB carries most of the benefits associated with CBD, but also introduces a euphoric high that can be beneficial for many users.

THCP and THCB are perhaps the two most similar compounds in this list. THCP is also a newly discovered cannabinoid, and some research suggests that the compound has relaxing impacts on the mind and some benefits regarding hypomobility, pain relief, and reduction in body temperature. Because both, THCB and THCP are so potent, they provide similar psychoactive effects, meaning that you need to ingest smaller amounts of these compounds than delta 9 in order to get similar effects.
